From Emily at The Chamber:

May 2008

Thirty-six business owners, property owners, and community members turned out for the second Open House for the Downtown Brainerd Street Reconstruction project (2009) Tuesday, April 29 at First Lutheran Church. This was the second Open House for the project and presented, for comments, a draft design for the new streets and sidewalks after the construction project is complete. Widseth Smith Nolting and SRF, the consultants hired by the City, presented a draft street design based on the comments they and the Main Street Advisory Committee received during the first Open House, which was mid-January.

So, what happens next? After thoroughly reviewing and discussing the comments given the Main Street Advisory Committee will make recommendations on traffic, parking, sidewalks, curbed bumpouts, streetscape components, and other surface features at their June 5 meeting. This recommendation will then be presented to the Safety and Public Works Committee and City Council meetings for their concurrence or modification on June 16. Then, WSN/SRF will proceed with the design to be presented at the third Open House towards the end of the summer. See the Open House Presentation" Construction

With spring popping out after our last bout with winter it's time to get ready for planting and weeding. It's also a great opportunity to take a fresh look at the landscaping around your business or house - to rake up leaves that were missed last fall, clip weeds or grass that grew a little too high, and make our community look terrific before summer gets underway.

In celebration of Minnesota's 150th Anniversary, walking tour maps of Historic Downtown Brainerd were created by diligent community volunteers and are now available at the Brainerd Public Library, Brainerd Lakes Chamber, and participating businesses. The Historic Walking Tour was prepared by very energetic community members with support from the City of Brainerd, Brainerd Lakes Chamber's Main Street Program, Crow Wing Historical Museum, Minnesota Historical Society, Brainerd Public Library, Central Lakes College, Lakes Printing Company, local businesses, and other community groups.

The Brainerd Main Street Program is a community-based effort to revitalize Brainerd's Central Business District, or CBD. The program area stretches from the Mississippi River to 11th Street and from Oak to Kingwood Streets. Though it is part of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, it is for members and non-members alike. This program is based on the
National Main Street Approach that has been used in over 1,700 communities during the past 25 years.

Thanks for sending this along, Emily!
